A new study has shown that coronavirus can stay in the air for at least half an hour, survive several days on some surfaces, and spread up to 4 meters.
Studies conducted by Chinese government epidemiologists undermine the findings of the authorities so far. about maintaining a “safe distance” from the patient of 1.5 meters.
‘It can be confirmed that in a closed, air-conditioned environment, the spread of the new coronavirus will exceed the widely recognized safe distance,’ the researchers wrote in an article published in the Chinese journal Practical Preventive Medicine.
Hunan province researchers say the SARS-CoV-2 virus can survive up to several days outside of the human body depending on the environment. Their research shows, among others that on glass, fabric, metal, plastic or paper it can survive for 2 to 3 days at a temperature of up to 98 degrees.
It can last more than 5 days in body fluids, which is also a longer period than initially assumed. What’s more, the same number of days is the virus incubation period, i.e. the time before we notice the first symptoms. It is possible that in a completely enclosed space the air flow is mainly driven by hot air produced by the air conditioning. Such air can transport droplets infected with the virus over a greater distance we read in the report of the researchers. Their conclusions were based primarily on data collected from infections in public transport.
Scientists say these data confirm the need to wear protective masks, although most specialists believe that masks should only be used by infected people. Researchers, however, highlighted another problem they recommended that sanitary conditions be improved in public transport.
