Polish scientists are working on the teeth breeding

Can third teeth be grown from the stem cells in the gums? Scientists from Poznań, Toruń and Warsaw are checking it. Researchers want to use cells taken from the gums to create not only tooth buds, but also tissues, e.g. nerve or cartilage.

The project is called SteamScaf and it involves scientists from the Warsaw University of Technology, the Medical University of Poznań and the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. It is financed under the Excellence Initiative of the WUT Research University (BioTechMed-3 Advanced).

The production of functional substitutes for tissues or even entire organs is a field classified as tissue engineering, in which specialists with medical and chemical knowledge as well as experts in materials engineering join their efforts. Cell cultures are an important aspect here. Until recently, such cultures were traditionally carried out in petri dishes, but in recent times scientists have focused more on three-dimensional cultures, where cells grow spatially rather than in a single layer, which better reflects the conditions present in the body. However, such cultures are more difficult because they require special scaffolding on which cells can develop and multiply.
