On September 17, the shipping channel through the Vistula Spit will be officially opened, said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Marek Gróbarczyk. Spit Cut at the end.

The official opening of the shipping canal through the Vistula Spit will take place on September 17 this year. The first units will sail through it that day - said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Marek Gróbarczyk during the Tuesday press conference.

Minister added that this is a special investment and real breakthrough.

The Vistula Spit cut is the main part of the construction of the new waterway between the Vistula Lagoon and the Bay of Gdańsk. The aim of the investment is to shorten, deepen and simplify the sea route to the Baltic Sea, bypassing the Piławska Strait on the territory of Russia. The project covers the construction of a protective port from the Gulf of Gdańsk, as well as a navigation canal with a lock, its closures and waiting stands for ships (on both sides), the construction of a new road system with two swing bridges and an artificial island in the Vistula Lagoon. The investor is the Maritime Office in Gdynia, and the general contractor is the consortium of NDI / Besix.

Spit Cut at the end. There is an opening date

The new waterway from the Bay of Gdańsk through the Vistula Lagoon to Elbląg is a section with a length of nearly 25 kilometers. The canal and the entire fairway will be five meters deep. The cost of the entire investment was originally supposed to be less than PLN 900 million. In 2020, however, the Ministry of Infrastructure announced that the works would cost a total of nearly 2 billion PLN. The increase was due, inter alia, to from rising prices of building materials.
