Speaking to “La Repubblica”, which published the photograph on the front page, Elena Pagliarini described that, that night, “the room was full of scared patients” and there were “many people with very severe respiratory failure”. “Until a few days ago, it was China on television. Now, Wuhan has come to us, ”he said.
Elena Pagliarini is a nurse in Cremona, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. He is 40 years old and has worked in the city hospital for a decade and a half. In the last few hours, a photograph of him sleeping, in uniform and wearing a mask, on a computer keyboard went viral and was published this Tuesday on the front page of the newspaper “La Repubblica”.
That night, “the room was full of scared patients” and there were “many people with very severe respiratory failure”, “people of all ages”. They were “people who suddenly found it difficult to breathe” and where “the fever suddenly went up”, he told “La Repubblica”.
“They were in bed, silent, but the eyes spoke for them”
The nurse revealed that what most impressed her was “the fear in the eyes” of the patients. “They were in bed, silent, but the eyes spoke for them,” he described.
Regarding the sudden explosion in the number of cases and deaths in Italy, Elena confessed: “Until a few days ago, it was China on television. Now, Wuhan [the Chinese city where the outbreak started in December] has come to us. ”
The nurse’s shift did not end until seven in the morning, but an hour before, she succumbed to fatigue. “Under normal circumstances, they would have said: ‘Here is a nurse who falls asleep during the shift’,” he concluded.
